Centre for women and children launches in Abuja

Azzawaj women and children intervention centre, an NGO seeking to contribute to efforts towards addressing the many challenges within the family and marriage system was launched on Tuesday in Abuja.


Founder of the centre, Asmau Abe Wala said the centre was birthed because of the many challenges facing marriage and family institutions leading to break up of marriages, broken homes and delinquent children.

“The manifest dysfunction in the family and marriage institutions constitutes a clear and present danger to societal cohesion and development” she said.

Hajiya Asmau said the centre aims to provide guidance and counseling programmes for both married and premarital to strengthen family and marriage institutions as well as transform and improve the welfare of the less privileged through empowerment, education and other developmental activities.

She also said the centre presently empowering about 50 women with revolving loans in two communities in Abuja, is about enroll about 25 orphans in school, and start a youth skill acquisition program to empower them with skills.

“The crux of the matter as par what Azzawaj sets to achieve is to provide guidance and councelling programmes for married and premarital couples because we strongly believe that there is a need  for couples to understand the principles and rules governing marriages before committing themselves to it” she said.

“We intend to assist women, youth, the aged and the less privileged and also all the vulnerable groups particularly victims of broken homes among them. We shall particularly focus on orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) roaming around the street, and as a special social category, we shall extent assistance to women and youth with the view to helping them establish businesses of their own, sponsor orphans and less privileged to school and provide them with skills and trainings” she added.

 While speaking, the chief launcher, Alhaji Umar Ambursa said the launch marks a significant milestone to the development of NGOs in Nigeria going by what it aims to achieve.

He said the areas of intervention by the centre focusing on poverty alleviation with the family as the main target will usher in a sustainable future for the country.
