Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Nigeria, SOGON has stressed the need for more women to be screened for reproductive tract cancers especially cervical cancer as well as the availability of radiotherapy centres.
It harped on the need for reduction in the high maternal mortality and perinatal rate in the country by training more skilled personal in prevention of post-partum haemorrhage as well as provision of drugs.
This was part of the communique read by SOGON President, Prof Oluwarotimi Akinola at the end of the society ‘s 51st Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Sokoto.
SOGON added that more doctors and nurses should be trained in neonatal resuscitation.
It solicited for nationwide implementation of the National Health ACT of 2014 which he noted ensures universal health coverage for all Nigerian citizens.
"There is need for government to financially support and implement all the evidence based integrated interventions that have proven to improve maternal and child health," it stated.
It stressed the need for more women to be screened for reproductive tract cancers especially cervical cancers and the availability of more radiotherapy centres.
SOGON expressed commitment to ensuring the implementation of its Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response initiative.
It described family planning as an integral pathway to reduction of the high rate of maternal and perinatal morbidly and mortality.
