A bus conductor, who is also an in-traffic robber was at the weekend arrested by policemen attached to the Lagos Anti-Crime outfit, the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
Ugochukwu Otuneme, 33, was arrested at Mile 2 area of Lagos after he and members of his gang had robbed occupants of some vehicles along the road.
The police in Lagos said the suspect was a member of a notorious syndicate which operates in the Mile 2 area.
A police source said Otuneme was the getaway driver, while another times he was in the robbery team threatening and demanding money from people held up in traffic.
The suspect also provided a place for the Ajegunle-based gang to stay and also obtained buses for their operations.
Otuneme confessed that he got involved with the robbery ring some years,ago, after getting out of prison for another robbery conviction.
The police also revealed that the gang was “highly sophisticated,,operating with trained precision.”
The police noted that Ugo as he was known, was a “utility player,” adding that he executed whatever role was given to him in their operation.
“The robbers victimized innocent citizens held up in the usual gridlock at,Mile 2, Alakija, by way of dispossessing them of cash and valuables,” the source said.
According to police report, various members of the seven-member gang participated in one or more of a string of takeover-style in-traffic robberies in Mile 2, Coconut bus stop, Liverpool and Tin-Can. And that during the robberies, the suspects jumped into the front a victim’s car in groups, covered head to toe in loose clothing and gloves, and demanded for money.
Otuneme confessed to the crime and added that he perpetrated the crimes with a member of the gang who is now at large.
“I came to Lagos in 2010. Before I joined this robbery gang, I was a bus conductor where I met one of the gang members who introduced me to his colleagues in robbery. It was devil who pushed me into this act,” he claimed.
Lagos State Police Acting Public Relations Officer, Pat Amadin, who confirmed the arrest, said the mobile team of the Rapid Response Squad in the state, at the weekend recorded another achievement through the arrest of a member of a notorious syndicate gang that terrorises the Mile 2 area of the metropolis.
She said the suspect was sighted attacking his victim, after breaking one of the window glasses of his vehicle while in traffic.
