Buni: Governing Yobe amidst national duties

Whilst many Governors have already begun work in their states with appointments of staff and key cabinet members, the very busy Governor Buni of Yobe State, is still very much engaged with national duties.

As Yobe waits eagerly to feel the full power of this young and progressive Governor, it becomes important to explain to the people of Yobe, the very important work Buni is doing nationally, and how this will benefit our state.

I worked with Buni in the role of Media Assistant, when he was the National Secretary of APC. I was also a member of the National Publicity Standing Committee at the party headquarters in Abuja. I am, therefore, in a position to explain in detail what Buni is doing and why we should give him our full moral support and well wishes. His actions will benefit us all.

Mai Mala Buni was the National Secretary of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and carried a lot of burdens and responsibilities. He helped to steer the party from almost nothing to defeat the then gargantuan behemoth, the corrupt, giant PDP and reduced them to nothing.

Despite this, President Muhammadu Buhari charged Buni to stay on and resolve all issues such as intra party squabbles from the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

Buni was a very successful National Secretary that provided effective leadership to the Party. No one, especially the members of the NWC or NEC wanted him to go, especially at this time when so much is at stake. We all need his experience, knowledge and efficiency which a new person can never hope to match. For him to leave the position at this moment could leave the party vulnerable.

Over the years, because of his purposeful and responsible leadership, every one depended on him for every decision taken and would turn to him to resolve most matters.  Even after winning Governorship election, Buni was still being depended on and being consulted for direction, settling issues and achieving objectives.

As the National Secretary of APC, a party with national heavyweights, with lots of crisis points and conflicting interests, the gentleman Buni was seen, quietly working, mediating and unifying the party.

Even now, with the upfront style of the National Chairman, Adams Oshiohmole, Buni has been there to guide him, pick up the pieces and smooth things over after his bruising conflicts with those who threaten the party.

The new National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiohmole, relied heavily on the experienced National Secretary to put the party in good stead ahead of the 2019 general elections. It involved putting together administrative strategies, political tactics, management structures, organisational procedures and party cohesion. His tight schedules continued right up to his election as Governor, and this has continued after his election. Buni does not rest.  It is work and work all the time.

It is because of his leadership qualities, that Governor Buni was saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that the APC caucuses remain united ahead of the inauguration of the ninth National Assembly.

It is no surprise that barely 24 hours after taking over the mantle of leadership in Yobe, Governor Buni jetted out to attend to the crucial meetings in Abuja aimed at smoothening the path for Ahmed Lawan’s senate presidency.

Every Yobean must understand the benefits to Yobe of having one of our sons, Ahmed Lawan as the Senate President, the No 3 in the hierarchy of leadership in the country. All Yobe is now behind Lawan.

Governor Buni is also busy with the recent decision of the National Working Committee of the APC that Yobe should produce the replacement for the vacant position of the National Secretary of the party. Imagine a Yobean as the Senate President and a Yobean as the National Secretary. All these were jointly engineered with Buni and he is making it all happen.

Governor Buni is busy acting on the national interest and interest of the ruling party, but it is also in the best interest of Yobe.  His actions will get Yobe a better deal from the centre to adequately compensate us for the massive support we gave the party in the 2019 general elections, which is almost 100% victory in every ward. This is time for Yobe.

It is with this knowledge that Yobeans can eagerly waiting for Buni to complete his national assignments and bring great value to Yobe. With his contributions in the national centre, he will be in the best position to ask for, and get favours and support from the Presidency for Yobe State.

Let us look at some of the areas he can ask for Federal Government support and intervention.

To complement the Governor’s effort in education, Yobe needs to be declared a national emergency. For that we can ask for the Minister from Yobe to be in Education so that federal resources can be directed to help us fight this scourge of poor education.

We hope that the person will be someone with a heart for education and great political clout like Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim.  He can fill those shoes for us in the centre as Minister of Education. He will ensure free and compulsory primary and secondary education in Yobe, which is his life long passion.  He has presented a beautiful and useful progressive manifesto on education in his book “Poorlitics”  It will also be a befitting reward for him for the way he stepped down from the Senate to bring peace and unite Yobe.

In the House of Representatives, we hope that a Yobean will become one of the principal officers. Buni certainly has the clout to ask for and push for this. Hon Khadija Bukar Ibrahim is good to go with her experience in the executive and legislative arm.

We also face desertification. This should also be declared a national emergency.  We need to develop an export strategy of Gum Arabic trees planted all over Yobe to fight desertification and give us wealth. We will need Federal Investment in such a strategy.

There are so many other projects and financial contributions that Governor Buni can command from the Federal Government because of what he is doing now to cement his relationship with the FG and the Buhari Presidency.

Governor Buni is acting in our best interest.  Even though we are already hungry for his leadership, we will wait for him to finish all the national assignments so he can concentrate on his new office.  When he succeeds, we will welcome him with joy and open arms, for we know he is prepared and ready to take us and Yobe to the Next Level.
