A gender rights activist, Barr Esther Uzoma, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate the emergence of a female speaker for the 9th House of Representatives.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Uzoma said the president should throw his weight behind women for the position of principal officers in the National Assembly as well as in his new cabinet as part of his pledge to women and as an affirmative action.
Uzoma, who is the national coordinator of Proactive Gender Initiative, said Rep Nkeiruka Onyeajocha (APC, Abia) is a ranking member of the House with requisite experience having served as chairperson of several committees as a four-time representative.
She listed some of the bills sponsored by Onyejeocha to include: Anti-torture Act 2017; National Senior Citizens Centre Act, 2017; Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshots Act 2017; and she co-sponsored the South East Development Commission Bill; and the National Council of Traditional Rulers (Establishment) Bill, 2015.
