World Health Organizations (WHO) and Borno state government along with other health actors have begun a campaign to prevent water-borne diseases after 35 people were taken will with diarrhoeal diseases in the latest outbreak.

The Coordinator Community Health Campaign, Raymond Apagu said in Maiduguri during sensitization on the campaign in Madinatu general Ares of Jere local government area of Maiduguri.

“We have been working here for almost two weeks, we are working 4 community including Gwozari, Kirawa,Shuwari and Medinatu in Jere local government area, there are small camps in these communities, we  are enlightening at least 20 households daily on important of hygiene and wash of hands.” Raymond confirmed.

World Health Organizations, Health Emergency Communication Officer for the Northeast Nigeria,  Chima  Onuekwe  explained that preventive measures are being putting place to ensure and curtailed any outbreaks of kind diseases.

“The measures we are putting in place is to stop any kind of outbreaks, all what we are doing is health educating from children to households to be able to prevent themselves from cholera because some cases of Acute Watery Diarrhea has been reported in Madinatu and Almuskin camps.

 “We are giving them Oral Rehydration Salt and Water Purification Tablets (Aquatabs) to enable them equipped and protect the entire households and the community,” Chima disclosed.

Similarly, The State Programme Manager for Malaria Elimination, Dr. Mala Waziri said the campaign will target one million children aged  between three months and five years, especially those living in most affected and devastated LGAs in Borno state.

 

“The choice of the 11 LGAs is based on the records that most hospitals there had been destroyed by insurgents because it was formally occupied by insurgents so those area has been devastated by Boko haram it is important we must protect children in those places like, Dikwa, Kala- Balge, Mafa, Mobbar, Guzamala,” Mala said.

Others include Kukawa, Nganzai, Damboa, Bama, Jere and Maiduguri Metropolis Council,” he said.

Dr. Mala noted that malaria usually spread as a result of mosquitoes and it has breading ground during rainy seasons because of the accumulation of stagnant waters.
