Sokoto state government Sunday pledged assistance for over 150 children orphaned by Boko Haram in North East being catered for in a school in Sokoto.
"These are our children. The unfortunate incidence that brought them here notwithstanding, we will step in and act as all parents should. They are home in Sokoto and it’s our collective responsibilities to cater for their needs," Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal asserted.
He stated this during a visit to the school and boarding facility established by a Sokoto-based philanthropist, Alhaji Umarun Kwabo.
The governor described the gesture as commendable and worthy of emulation.
"Seeing these children happy is both touching and encouraging, he stated.
Tambuwal promised,"In my personal capacity and as government, we will render our assistance to ensure that the children are comfortable."
The governor directed officials from the ministries of health and social welfare development to constantly monitor the progress of the children.
Speaking, Alhaji Umarun Kwabo noted that, "some of the Orphans are as young as three years",saying he decided to act as he was touched by the plight of the children.
According to him, caregivers and teachers who speak the children’s native tongues had been recruited to make their stay easier.
