Bird flu hits Plateau, kills 3,900 birds

An outbreak of avian influenza has hit two local government areas of Plateau State, killing about 3,900 birds, the Chief Veterinary Officer of the state, Dr Spak Shaset, has confirmed.

Shaset had in a telephone conversation with Daily Trust said two farms were affected in Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas and that the farms had been “depopulated, decontaminated, disinfected, quarantined and sealed.”

He said: “We suspected it on the 9th of February and samples were sent to the lab at the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) and the result came out positive on the 11th .  The veterinary Service Department and the Avian Influencer desk office immediately swung into action to contain the situation.”
