Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has urged the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Senator George Akume not to arrogate supreme powers to himself as only the Benue people who voted him into power can remove him from office.
Ortom told newsmen in Makurdi on Monday that it became necessary for him to respond to the remarks made by Akume at the APC’s expanded stakeholders meetings held on Sunday in Makurdi where he (Akume) allegedly boasted that he would remove the governor from office in six months.
“It is unfortunate that the senator arrogated to himself such powers that belongs to only God and the Benue people who voted this government into power. Under what law would he as an individual remove a governor in six months?” he asked.
The governor who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, reminded the state’s APC leader that he recently failed to actualise his plan against Ortom when he allegedly spearheaded eight legislators of the state assembly to impeach him.
Ortom further emphasised that, “only the people who voted this administration have the power to remove and not the senator. He tried it with eight lawmakers and failed; he will fail again.”
He therefore urged Akume who had already spent three terms of 12 years at the Senate to present his scorecard to his constituents rather than conspiring with enemies of the state to wreak havoc on innocent citizens, stressing the need for leaders of his calibre to speak with decorum.
