A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Joseph Waku, on Saturday implied that because of his age he could make useful contribution for the development of the country irrespective of party affiliation.
Waku made the remark in an interview with newsmen in Makurdi while commenting on his expectation of the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary election holding in Benue State today.
He opined that Governor Samuel Ortom would be the man to beat not only on the platform of the PDP but among all the aspirants eyeing the governorship seat in the forthcoming election.
"I'm too old to follow just APC. I'm a member of the APC but I'm old enough to know the difference. I'm too old for any man to direct whatever my conscience tells me and my conscience tells me that Ortom is the best among all the aspirants in Benue state as at today. Take it or leave it, that's your business," he said.
Waku, currently the Pro-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure in Ondo State, posited that the PDP would have a peaceful primary election in the state, adding that whoever emerges would eventually be supported to fly the party's flag.
The APC chieftain on that ground insisted that he would support the best candidate as a matter of principle so that he can build a lasting legacy for the admiration of generations unborn.
"Do you know what McCain of USA did before he passed on, he was called from the hospital to go and vote against Donald Trump of his party. It is principle and that is what I want to leave behind. When I'm gone, I should be talked about the principle that JKN Waku left behind. I'm too old to follow just APC. I'm old enough to know what I want," Waku maintained.
A former senator from Benue State, Senator Joseph Waku has called on the federal government to take drastic measures against the recent killing of more than 50 people in different Benue communities.
Speaking on the phone, he told Daily Trust that federal government should collaborate with Benue government, the Fulani leadership, farmers and all stakeholders to bring peace to Benue.
"It is high time the federal government pays special attention to the issue of Benue State. We have been battling this problem. It should be treated like the Boko Haram terrorists issue. It has gone beyond herdsmen now. It is the duty of the federal government to protect lives and properties,” he said.
"From the reports I received, my community has been sacked. Their farm produce, houses and other properties have been destroyed and the perpetrators have not been arrested up till this moment. I think this is not being done by the Fulanis that we know.”
