Media practitioners in Kano state have on Friday recommended a constructive, fearless and selfless advocacy by the media in advancing effective Primary Health Care services delivery in the nation through proactive and evidence-based reportage, information analysis among other approaches to educate the policy and legislative realms on the importance of basic healthcare funding.
The recommendation was contained in a communique issued at the end of a one-day capacity building workshop for the media on basic healthcare funding in Nigeria organised by Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC).
According to the communique signed by jointly signed by Fatimah Shehu Aliyu of Express Radio and Kola Oyelere of the Nigeria Tribune stated that, as important as the health sector is there is a need for the creation of a formidable synergy among the media in factual and investigative reporting to educate the executives and legislature on their constitutional mandates towards efficient Primary Health Care system in the state.
The communique also observed that, while adequate and optimal health care delivery services constitutes component of good governance and national development, in Nigeria, adequate access to Primary Health Care services is hindered by unethical attitudes or dearth of healthcare facilities among other vices that exacerbates maternal and child mortality rate across the country.
