Aviation: FG leverages on infrastructure, security to attract investments

The Federal Government, yesterday, reiterated its commitment to the implementation of the aviation roadmap approved by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 aimed at opening up the sector for investments.

The government also assured prospective investors of security and requisite infrastructural support for their investments to ensure long-term business sustainability.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, stated this while declaring open the 59th Airport Council International (ACI) Africa Regional Conference and Exhibition in Lagos.

The conference with the theme, ‘Business Transformation for Sustainable Development of African Airports’ attracted global aviation experts and leaders including the President of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Dr. Olumuyiwa Aliu and his ACI counterpart, Angela Gittens, among others.

Mustapha enthused that the full implementation of the aviation roadmap, which is progressing in line with milestone targets, would result in the implementation of business and economic growth in the sector.

According to him, Africa is one of the fastest growing air transport markets in the world.

But he said the rapidly-expanding air traffic “can only be sustained and optimized through the continued development and modernization of local aviation infrastructure, particularly at airports.”

Aliu urged Nigeria and other ICAO member states to “deliver tremendous support to airport operators looking for investments by taking pragmatic measures to realize transparent, stable and predictable regulatory climates, whether for direct investment, business reform, private finance initiatives, or public-private partnerships (PPP).”

ACI President, Ms. Angela Gittens, who urged African countries to provide the needed support and leadership for the growth of the airport industry, welcomed Nigerian efforts to strengthen her airports to provide safe and secure air transportation services.

Also speaking, President of ACI-Africa and Managing Director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Saleh Dunoma, said FAAN has enjoyed mutually beneficial relationship with ACI-Africa which has focused on safety and security of airports.

He said Nigeria has been in the forefront of achieving the highest level of safety standards with the recent certification of Lagos and Abuja airports, saying the goal of the authority is to certify all international airports soon.
