American University of Nigeria (AUN) on Monday inducted about 200 fresh students into its various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes while showcasing nine academics it recruited to expand its faculty.

Speaking at the Pledge Ceremony in Yola, Adamawa state, AUN President, Dawn Dekle urged the fresh students not to be deterred as they can be whatever they choose to be.

“Use your time to develop yourself and make AUN work for you,” she added.

Dekle spoke of the university’s expansion plans noting that the induction marked the university’s 14th academic year with 10 percent foreign students represented in the admission.

The Vice President of Academics/Provost, Prof. Mohammadou Kah, while addressing the Class of 2020 up to 2023 said, “Our role is to provide quality education to all of you irrespective of where you come from or who you are.”

As he urged the freshmen to be focused, he said, “You have come to a university where if you do what is required of you, you can stand any graduate from any university in the world.”

Besides upgrading the facilities, AUN at the event announced nine new lecturers who are Ph.D holders with teaching experiences from UK, US, South Africa, among others.

The breakdown of the students shows about 150 undergraduates in various courses; about 38 undergraduates for the five year law programme; about nine Postgraduate and M.Sc students, and five Ph.D students.

Equally, the Vice President for Student Life, Mr Byron Bullock urged the students on being focused. “While you are at AUN, make every hour count for something, and don’t forget why you came here,” Bullock said.

President of the Student Government Association of the University, Yusuf Usman, shared his experience with the freshmen as he urged them to embrace community services and leadership opportunities during their study years. With these qualities, he said, “We can compete with every students from any school.”

The President, Women Leadership Council, Ms. Fiyinfoluwa Owoeyewyse on her part said she explored various skills and leadership roles which has helped to shape her, and urged the freshmen to imbibe same.

The students during the pledge, vowed to seek and speak the truth and demand of themselves absolute integrity for the sake of Nigeria, Africa, and their future.
