ASUU to FG: We are not shifting ground

Chairperson of ASUU, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Dr. Ikenna Nwachukwu, at a press conference in Owerri yesterday, insisted that time for negotiation with the federal government was over.
Nwachukwu said that the union shifting ground might portend danger by allowing the Nigerian universities not only to produce half backed graduates but the institutions to remain in comatose.
The ASUU chairperson said that what the union wants to achieve is to bring all necessary attention to the country’s universities and to ensure they are revitalized in the interest of both the students and the system.
He said that if the 2009 agreement with the federal government is faithfully implemented as being demanded, it would transform and reposition the university system.
He regretted that the federal government singled out and implemented only two provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding which were the  amendment of retirement age of academics on the professional cadre from 65-70 years and the reconstitution of the governing councils of federal universities in the country.
