APC chieftain calls for direct presidential primaries

Dankadai, who was member, elders committee of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), alleged that an indirect primary would give the governors and the party an upper hand in choosing the party’s presidential candidate, come 2015.
“Our party stands for democracy and that is one of the main reasons of forming the party; to give Nigerians the chance to choose their leadership.  So my suggestion to our party is that the forthcoming presidential primary election should be through direct option because it will give the ordinary grassroots card-carrying members the opportunity to elect the candidate of their own choice,” he said.
Dankadai expresses fear that an indirect voting speculated for the primaries will deprive the majority of party members the opportunity to participate in the primaries.
“If the party conducts indirect primaries, only smaller number of people will go and participate as party leaders and delegates which definitely means there is going to be manipulations by the state governors who will easily use the party leadership and delegates in favour of their preferred candidate,” he added.
