The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bashir Makama, yesterday confirmed that former Governor Ibikunle Amosun gave a total of 1.4 million ammunition, three ballistic helmets and one Armoured Personnel Carrier to the command at the expiration of his tenure.

Speaking to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday, the CP said he has the statutory responsibility to “disarm” and “dispossess” Amosun.

“All he (Amosun) did was to say ‘CP, since I am leaving, I have items for the police. And before now in 2012, I gave them 1,000 AK47 rifles and now I have some ammunition, let me give them (ammunition) to you.’

“So, he (Amosun) handed (over) to me 1.4 million and a little fraction of ammunition, three ballistic helmets, one APC which he had bought sometimes back and gave (some) to the command, but maybe kept that one. He gave that 1,000 AK47 rifles to the police in 2012 when he was the governor…”

Asked whether the Force Headquarters was aware of the receipt of the ammunition, the CP said: “I don’t keep anything to myself. It’s not my personal property. He did not dash me. He did not say ‘Makama, I dash you’.So, why would I keep it? The headquarters is aware.

“They (ammunition) are safely in our armoury and when it’s time to use them, we will decide.”

Amosun’s spokesman, Rotimi Durojaiye, neither answered calls nor replied a text message sent to him by our reporter last night for a reaction.
