The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has called on politicians across all the political parties in the country to ensure peaceful conduct during campaigns and elections.
President of ALGON, Gambo Tanko Kagara, made the call during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the association in Abuja.
Kagara said there was need for all aspirants and candidates to work towards the unity of the country, adding that the meeting was held to ensure unity at the grassroots as political processes commenced.
The ALGON boss also called on governors that are yet to conduct local government elections in their states to quickly do so.
He called on state houses of assembly to pass local government autonomy bills in their states, saying that autonomy was the basis of grassroots development.
Kagara also advised Nigerians to watch and assess candidates to ensure that they voted competent people who would take care of their resources.
