The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigation into high profile fraud against teachers of Federal Government colleges in the metropolis.
The decision to extend the dragnet came after the arrest of a woman who allegedly swindled people of several millions of naira.
The suspect, Jennifer, had allegedly swindled parents after promising to secure Federal Government college admissions for their children.
It was gathered that Jennifer who was arrested and detained at the Sabo police station, had been on the run for three years.
A police source said the suspect, during admission period, would come to Lagos from the eastern part of the country to get some persons who would patronise her.
The suspect was said to have swindled parents of over N10 million in the last admission held in 2016.
A police source said the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, had been besieged by parents who claimed that they paid between N270,000 to N400,000 to some teachers who promised to help them secure admission into Federal Government colleges in Lagos for their children.
The complainants alleged that they gave the said sums of money to the teachers to help their wards secure admission into schools like Kings College, Lagos Island, Queens College, Yaba, and Federal Government College, Ijanikin.
A police source said the aggrieved parents claimed that despite the fact that they had been arm-twisted to pay the agreed sums, the schools were now in second term and yet there was no hope that their wards would get the admission.
“It seems to me that there is a cartel involved in this racket. Some have said that their children actually passed the last entrance exam but that their admissions have been sold to those who are willing to pay,” he added.
The source further disclosed that the cartel, after collecting money, issued fake admission letters to the children and disappeared.
“We had received series of complaints about members of this syndicate for three years now. We started trailing one Jennifer, until we picked her up recently.
“Since we arrested her, over 50 victims have shown up. She collected money, ranging from N100,000 to N300,000. There are some families that she collected money to secure admission for two persons. She has collected over N10 million from victims,” police said.
One of the victims, Mr. Nat Ojie said, “Jennifer collected N250,000 from me to secure admission for my daughter in Federal Government College. She stopped picking my calls since two years ago. I was contacted by one of my friends who is also a victim that she has been arrested.
“I want justice to be done to prevent her from swindling other innocent people,” he said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dolapo Badmos, said the suspect was arrested by Sabo Police Division.
