Abuja teachers give two weeks strike ultimatum over salaries

The union gave the warning after an emergency meeting of its executive in Abuja, where it decried what it termed an unending series of screening and verification of teachers with nothing to show for it.
In a letter jointly signed by its chairman, Comrade Hassan Jibir, and the secretary, Comrade Labaran Garba, the union lamented that the unending verification exercises have turned teachers into the ‘most humiliated species.’
It said: “We vehemently condemn the recent directive to stop salaries of over 3,000 of our members following the release of result of the biometric exercise.”
It added that the result was “unrealistic, unreliable, invalid and an attempt to inflict more hardship and frustration on our members, with reasons for the stoppage of their salaries not clearly elucidated in the biometric result.”
The teachers also condemned what it termed the inadequate provision of instructional materials in schools, irregular release of teacher’s promotions, stoppage of study leave and in-service for teachers.
Reacting, Public Relations Officer, FCT Education Secretariat, Mr. Anthony Ogunleye, said management has started deliberation on an appropriate response to the ultimatum. He added that the 3,000 workers relieved of their jobs were not only teachers but also other categories of staff.
