Abuja teacher accused of defiling 2-yr-old baby

A teacher in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has been arraigned before an Abuja magistrate’s court sitting in Jiwa for allegedly defiling a 19-month-old baby.
Sebastian Kuni, 28, a resident of Karmo area in Abuja, was arraigned before the court by David Kafanchan, a prosecuting officer from the Federal Ministry of Justice, for allegedly committing indecent assault, an offence contrary to Section 285 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused, who lived in the same compound with the parents of the baby in Karmo, took her into his room some time on May 22 and started fingering her private part which resulted into an injury on the baby.
According to him, after the matter was reported to the Karmo police division, the baby was taken to Gwarinpa General Hospital and, later, to a private clinic, due to a strike action embarked upon by public hospitals at the time, where she was treated.
“During the police investigation, you confessed to the crime and also said that it was the devil that made you to do such,’’ the prosecutor said.
When the one-count charge was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and sought for bail.
Magistrate Binta Dogon-Yaro granted the bail application in the sum of N500,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum, who must be civil servants of not below Grade-Level 16 and residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned to July 19 for hearing.
