Many people were believed to have been killed yesterday in an attack at Tunga village in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State by suspected militiamen, raising tension in the central zone of the state.
But the police spokesman, DSP David Misal, who confirmed the attack, said five people were killed.
Our correspondent gathered that the attackers suspected to be a militia killed many people and burned several houses before fleeing.
A resident said the attack could be a reprisal over the killing of a pastor and his wife at Maraban Donga last Monday.
Taraba central had been relatively peaceful and the attack has heightened tension in Tiv villages in the area.
“The police commissioner has ordered deployment of more policemen to the affected area and efforts are being made to track down the attackers”, he said.
