The Plateau State Police Command yesterday confirmed five persons were killed and 12 houses burnt in a sectarian crisis in Jos on Sunday.
The crisis, caused by the discovery of a boy’s corpse between Anguwan Damisa and Dutse-Uku, sparked a riot in parts of Rikkos, Cele-Bridge, Tina Junction and Anguwan Rukuba in Jos North.
Youths went on the rampage, attacking perceived rivals, damaging vehicles and setting houses ablaze. The intervention of security agents had contained the situation, but our correspondents gathered that gunshots were heard all throughout the night within the general area.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Tyopev Terna identified the discovered corpse as that of one Enoch, deposited at the Plateau Specialist Hospital.
He said with a combined security efforts, the situation had been brought under control and that the area was being patrolled.
It was gathered a group of women yesterday morning protested against attempts to arrest them by men of Operation Safe Haven.
The women were said to have been arrested and bundled into a military truck in an area referred to as ‘Executive Mansion’ by Tina Junction.
Operation Safe Haven Commander, Major-General Augustine Agundu, in a radio programme, said arrests had been made by the taskforce and normalcy had been restored to the areas.
He said the security situation in Jos North would be re-engineered to forestall reoccurrence of such incidents.
