A total of 32 youth sports club drawn from all military barracks in Abuja are taking part in the 2019 Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) youth sports championship.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja during the opening ceremony, Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral, Akpochi Suleiman who also served as guest of honour said the championship is obviously in line with the CDS’s vision of empowering and encouraging the development of sports among the teeming youths in the military barracks in Abuja.
He said the championship is aimed at ensuring a vibrant, socially, well-disposed, mentally and physically fit barracks youths population.
Suleiman also said the championship serves as an avenue for discovering new talents and fostering the spirit of sportsmanship among the participants.
Rear Admiral Akpochi maintained that the championship hold prospects of bringing out the much-needed champions who can represent the barracks and make the service and the nation proud in future sports engagements.
He, therefore, advised the participants to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship, abide by the rules of the game as they compete for laurels during the championship.
The young athletes are competing for laurels in badminton, volleyball, basketball and handball.
