240 golfers tee-off Daily Trust President Buhari golf tourney in Benin

The Daily Trust’s President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-day golf tournament yesterday kicked off at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Golf Course, Edo state.

Daily Trust reports that over 240 Golfers from the South-South region are participating in the zonal tournament to pick those to represent the zone at the national level.

The tournament was declared opened by the state deputy governor Philip Shaibu accompanied by  UBTH Chief Medical Director, Darlington Obaseki, Prof Eugene Okpere, former UBTH CMD, Mathew Iduoriyekemwen and other golfers.

The Deputy Governor who commended the Daily Trust for organising the event assured that he and the state Governor Godwin Obaseki, will also participate in the tournament as well as the closing ceremony.

Speaking with Daily Trust, one of the golfers, Mathew Iduoriyekemwen, described the tournament as very interesting and an avenue for golfers to showcase their skills.

“I have done my best today and I hope to do better tomorrow and be among the winners that will play at the national level,” he said.

He commended Daily Trust for organising the event, noting that sport is one of the ways of giving back to the society financially, materially and physically.

Another golfer, Prof. Eugene Okpere, who is the founder of the course, described the tournament as very successful with number of golfers participating in the tournament.

“We are happy with Daily Trust because golf is a sport that enable many people, especially those above 50 years to do better.

The tournament is going well, a lot of people across the region are participating in the tournament,” he said.

Similarly, UBTH Golf club captain, Prof. Anthony Monye-Emina, said the turnout is encouraging given the circumstances at hand.

“The turn out would have been more than this, but the Benin Golf Club captain is organising a tournament to mark the end of his tenure and most of the player are there. Also the information about the tournament did not come out on time, so level of awareness was not much, that why you have this turn out but it is still very encouraging,”

He said “the tournament is very successful, if you look at the score board, the scores are very encouraging and satisfactory due to the challenging nature of the course. So the performance is good,”

Monye-Emina expressed optimism that he would be among the winners that will play in the final having been among those that play the lowest scores.

On her part, UBTH Golf Club lady captain, Prof. (Mrs) Caroline Oforwe, said the essence of the tournament has been successfully accomplished.

She said the tournament afford her the opportunity of meeting new players and learning from them, commending Daily Trust for organising the event the UBTH golf course.”

It is beautiful having Daily Trust at the UBTH golf club. Participants from various states are here, I did my best and hope that my best will take me to the final,” she said.
