A member of the House of Representatives from Kwara State, Zakari Mohammed (PDP, Kwara), has said his track record of achievements, political experience and zoning arrangement stand him in the best position for the 2019 Kwara guber race.
Addressing newsmen after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms on Wednesday Mohammed promised to make agriculture, sports, rural development, education and health his top priority, if given the mandate.
“I believe I have what it takes to be governor of Kwara State given my experience as former Special Assistant, former Commissioner and a two-term lawmaker in the House of Representatives.”
“You are also aware that since 1999, only Kwara North, where I come from, has not produced a governor. The other two zones have taken their turns,” he said.
Asked if he had sought the consent of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, the lawmakers said: “I am a member of the Saraki political family. I started my politics in that house (Saraki’s). For me, I don’t think that should be a problem.”
He added that since Kwara is a melting pot of different cultures in Nigeria, he would ensure an aggressive development of agriculture so as to address the unemployment problem in the state.
On Sports, the journalist-turned politician promised to replicate the giant strides he achieved as former Special Assistant, Commissioner of Sports and Chairman of Kwara United, during which Kwara Football Academy was established while Kwara United was the darling of soccer-loving Nigerians.
“Sports has three key areas it handles human psychology. These are employment, well being and revenue generation. I want to make Kwara the sports destination of Nigeria,” he stated.
He vowed to address rural development as a way of combating the menace of rural-urban drift, which he admitted puts enormous pressure on the existing facilities in the urban centres.
On how he intends to outwit other contestants, Rep Mohammed noted: “Politics is local and of course, if you are familiar with Kwara politics and how we do our things there, you will observe that we have a strong political structure, which is an election winning machine any day.”
“For us, whether federal might or not, we are not bothered,” the guber aspirant boasted.
