The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and the nation’s political parties under the auspices of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have resolved to move against vote buying and violations of regulations on campaign spending for the 2019 General Elections.
This is part of the resolution of a Capacity Building Workshop for the parties National Organizing Secretaries and some national leaders of the parties, organised by the NIPSS and the European Union (EU) Support Programme to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN).
Speaking at the event, the acting Director General of NIPSS, Mr. Jonathan Mela Juma, said the event was for the parties to develop regulations to include limits to campaign spending in consonance with relevant provision of the Electoral Act.
The IPAC National Chairman, Chief Peter Ameh, said the council, CSOs and other stakeholders have been carrying out series of advocacy across the country to sensitize and mobilize voters on the need to protect and not sell their votes.
Ameh, who is also the National Chairman of the Progressives Peoples Alliance (PPA), said “people should do away with vote buying.
On his part, the NIPSS Director of Research and Chief Operating Officer of the Political Parties Leadership and Policy Development Centre (PPLPDC), Prof. Habu Galadima, said though there must be expense during elections; it should not be at the detriment of the nation.
