2013 power sector privatisation most transparent – Igali

The former Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Power, Amb. Godknows Igali has said the 2013 power sector privatisation was adjudged by international bodies as the most ambitious, courageous and transparent.

Igali who was the ministry’s permanent secretary during the privatisation process until 2015 disclosed this recently in Abuja at a sent-forth dinner in honour of the Senior Adviser, Infrastructure at Department for International Development (DFID), Mr Keith Hammond and Roseann Casey, the Director, Office of Economic Growth and Environment, United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He said with robust decisional support from the USAID and the World Bank, “we went through a very ambitious privatisation, perhaps privatisation business which was at the time adjudged to be the most transparent.”

The privatisation exercise culminated in the handover of six Generation Companies (GenCos) and 11 Distribution Companies (DisCos) to private investors on November 1, 2013, about five years ago while the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) was not privatised but under managerial contract by Manitoba Hydro International Nigeria Limited (MHINL).
