17, 000 prospective teachers write qualification exam

About 17,000 soon-to-be teachers yesterday wrote Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) nationwide.

The Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, made the remarks during the examination in Abuja. He said prospective teachers would have to pass the PQE, before they can be allowed to teach, adding that over 17,000 candidates took part in the exam, including 3,000 in Bauchi State and 900 in Abuja.

He said the council would be transparent and fair to all candidates.

The Computer Base Test (CBT) was designed to test the intellectual and academic competence of people that want to take up career in teaching.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who monitored the exercise in Abuja, said those who have not obtained PQE certificate would not be allowed to teach in both public and private schools by 2019.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Sunny Echono, Adamu said the exam would assist the government restore the pride of the teaching profession.

He said the exercise would enable teachers to have the right academic qualifications, attitude and relevant tools to effectively pass knowledge to students.

“That is why we have continued to announce that December 2019 remains the deadline for all unregistered teachers to obtain professional certifications or be evicted from the noble profession,” he said.
