Widow, 32, jailed for hot ‘burukutu’ attack

An Upper Area Court in Masaka, Nasarawa State, has sentenced a 35-year-old woman, Mrs Celina Maiwada,  to six months in prison for pouring hot burukutu, a locally made alcoholic drink on her neighbour.

Mrs Maiwada, a widow, with four children, was sentenced to six months in jail after she pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to one Mr Iyok Yahaw.

The prosecutor, Francis  Swem, had earlier told the court that the complainant, "One Mr Alexander Dogo of Angwan Gwandara, Masaka  came to the divisional police command to report that while he and his brother were sitting at a local drinking spot at Angwa Jaba, the accused hit his brother Iyok Yahaw with a stick and when they confronted her she poured hot burukutu on him and as result he sustained first degree burns on his back."
