Clark: Govs are dictators

Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark yesterday criticised state governors over what he called their dictatorial tendencies.
Clark, a former Information minister, said in an open letter made available to journalists that most of the governors are more dictatorial than military governors were.
He said the Nigerian Governors Forum has constituted itself into an opposition party to the Federal Government, thereby becoming a threat to peace and stability of the country.
Clark’s letter is titled: “How the Governors Forum has hijacked the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has flagrantly breached the 1999 constitution with impunity.”
He said the governors’ forum has “hijacked” the ruling PDP.
“It deliberately breach with impunity, the 1999 Constitution and the constitution of the PDP without challenge,” he said.
“The ugly truth is that today the PDP as a political party is no longer in control of its various organs and for some time now, proper elections at congresses and conventions have not been held democratically due to the imposition of unqualified members on the good members of the party, contravening section 87(4) of the amended Electoral Act 2011.”
Clark said even though the governors’ forum has a “peer review mechanism”, it has never prevailed on its erring members to do what is right.
He accused the governors of turning a blind eye when Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako tried to impose his wife as chief judge of the state but they gave “unholy” support to him in the crisis over the state chapter of the PDP.
Attempts by Daily Trust to get comments from the secretariat of the Nigerian Governors Forum were not successful, as the forum’s director general Asishana Akauru could not be reached by telephone.
