Nigeria need more squash competitions – Dashback
Category: Sports Written by -
Longdie Dashback, the country’s number two ranked female squash player, has bemoaned the absence of regular competitions in the country, which she said was needed to sharpen the competitive edge of players.
Dashback added that lack of regular competitions, was exacting its toll on players and could deny them the opportunity to maximise their potentials in the sport.
She said in an interview yesterday in Lagos that if given the necessary exposure the players would perform beyond their current capacity.
The player added that the country’s performance in the Feb. 19 to Feb. 24 Africa Senior Squash Championships in Namibia, exposed the weaknesses of the country’s representatives at the event.
Nigeria came back empty handed from the recently concluded championships which took place in Windhoek, Namibia.
Dashback got eliminated in the quarter-final of the women’s singles event of the championships, by Chiffon Walter of South Africa.
“One thing that really gave us out was the fact that we lacked exposure; we did not win any medals, not because they were better than us but because they were well exposed.
“Even the lady that defeated me was already getting set to participate in another championship after the one in Namibia, but we are here doing nothing after the championship.
“The experience is okay, with what we have seen we will have to work on areas that need to be taken care of in future engagements,” Dashback said.
The 2013 Africa Senior Championships that took place in Windhoek, Namibia held from Feb. 19 to Feb. 24 with eight countries participating in it.
The countries are: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mauritius, Botswana and Egypt. (NAN)
