Chairmen of the North-East states Football Associations have unanimously distanced themselves from the recent attempts by F.A chairmen from the other zones to impeach the incumbent president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari.
After several meetings with the NFF president during the 2013 AFCON in South Africa, the F.A chairmen who claimed they have axes to grind with Maigari met again with him in Abuja last week where it was reported they held a closed door meeting that lasted for several hours.
Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday on condition of anonymity, one of the chairmen from the North-East zone vehemently condemned any attempt to impeach Maigari as he said the zone would never be a party to it.
He said after the series of meetings held in South Africa, he did not expect the ‘disgruntled’ F.A chairmen to continue with the attempts to impeach the president of the NFF.
According to him, even as most of the allegations such chairmen brought against Maigari were frivolous, they were given the opportunity to state their grievances with the expectation that they would give peace a chance.
He explained that the chairmen from the North East zone were not only disappointed by the renewed attempts to impeach Maigari but felt let down by their colleagues and that was why they boycotted the meeting in Abuja.
His words: “I want to confirm to you that we are not part of any attempt by anyone to impeach the NFF president. The North East zone can never be in support of such baseless agitations.
“After meeting with the president in South Africa, we resolved to work harmoniously with the leadership of the NFF. We do not know what else they want so we are not with them in this. This is the reason we stayed away from the meeting in Abuja”.
The F.A chairman said instead of harassing and distracting the NFF president at a time he has led the country to her third AFCON title, the F.A chairmen should join hands in helping to sustain the success.
“I am personally disappointed in what some of my colleagues are doing. I do not understand why they are doing this at a time the president has successfully championed our football revival.
“I repeat we from the North East are totally against what is happening and by the special grace of God, those who want to cause new confusion in our football will not succeed”, he stated.
