Mapping essential for sustained planning, says SGF
The Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGF), Prof. Peter Nwilo, says mapping is an essential tool for sustained planning and socio-political development in any country.
Nwilo, who made the statement in an interview in Abuja on Monday, said that mapping was a graphic representation of features on a plain surface that appear on the curved surface of the earth.
He added that the map would provide every detail of objects on the surface of an area.
The surveyor-general noted that with proper mapping, the country could effectively sustain its security measures and check smuggling.
“It is on record that the most developed countries in the world are those which are mapped.’’
Nwilo said that the office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation was engaged in advocacy to sensitise relevant authorities and the public on the importance of mapping.
The Presidency, he added, had been supporting the office in terms of creating an enabling environment to sustaining advocacy.
The Federal Ministry of Works would produce series of maps aimed at promoting national development this year, he said.
The maps would further give details of the different environments in the country.
“But for such a development to take place, some basic infrastructure must be there and one of them is the map at an adequate scale.
“When you are designing and building a road, there must be a map at an adequate scale.
“That is why the federal government is working hard to ensure that it produces series of maps this year.’’
He said that the office was also working to capture the extent of federal highways to ensure that people did not build on right of way.
Nwilo said that the office would apply modern technology to facilitate the delineation of roads, adding that the new technology would achieve better results, cheaper and faster than the traditional method previously used. (NAN)
