Red Cross cautions Nigeria on Mali

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) yesterday said Nigerian troops deployed to Mali for peace enforcement operations must act within the confines of international humanitarian laws.
The committee met with the Minster of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, and military service chiefs in Abuja.
Head of the ICRC delegation in Nigeria Zoran Jovanovic said during the meeting that all troops must abide by the Geneva Conventions, especially those related to the treatment war victims and prisoners of war.
The minister said that Nigerian troops “will act in accordance with the rules of engagement” and respect fundamental human rights.
