Senate bemoans plight of awaiting trial inmates

The Senate yesterday bemoaned the plight of inmates awaiting trial in the country. Debating a bill for an Act to amend the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) (Special Provisions) Act 2004 to provide more effective means of decongesting prisons, Senate President David Mark, Senate Deputy Leader Abdul Ningi and several other senators insisted that detention without trial must come to an end. “It is not in the interest of the country for people to be kept for too long in prison. Apart from this, the inhuman nature of such treatment is highly worrisome,” Mark said.
