Wukari crisis: Police arrest 100, death toll rises to 31

The Taraba State Police Command yesterday said it has arrested more than 100 people in connection with the sectarian crisis in Wukari, and that the death toll has increased to 31.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP. Amos Olaoye, told newsmen in Jalingo that security agents are on top of the situation.
According to him, Wukari is saturated with heavy presence of anti-riot policemen and soldiers.
While appealing for calm, Olaoye warned that security agencies would not take it lightly with anyone found trying to foment trouble in the area.
The spokesman said many people died as a result of injuries they sustained during the crisis, adding that more corpses were recovered in more than 50 buildings burnt in the village.
Olaoye said hundreds of residential houses, business premises, churches and mosques were razed during the incident.
He said several other people who sustained injuries were receiving treatment in various hospitals in Wukari and its neighbouring towns.
It would be recalled that crisis broke out on Feb. 23, following an argument among some youths during a training session at a football pitch. (NAN)
