Police arrest over 30 Keffi students ...gunshot casualty’s condition worsens

The police have arrested over 30 students in connection with the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) students’ demonstration which rocked the ancient town on Monday.
 
Also, the condition of Abdulmajid Abubakar, a second year student of Chemistry, who was among the students shot by armed soldiers and policemen during the about six hours’ demonstration has worsened, according to hospital spokesman, Jamilu Nagogo. He said the figure of casualties at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) where the students are being treated remained two dead, and four wounded by gunshots.
 
Meanwhile, the police in the state said they have contacted the school authorities to contact families of the deceased, as well as the injured.  
 
Students of the university poured into major roads in Keffi in protest against lack of water after two weeks. Soldiers and policemen sent to break the demonstrators fired shots, killing two, and injuring four.
 
The Students Union Government (SUG) leader, Comrade Rabiu Omame Tijani told Daily Trust by phone, today, that over 30 students were arrested by the combined team of soldiers and policemen, and detained at the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Lafia.
 
“They arrested over 30 of our students, and detained them in Lafia”, Comrade Tijani said, and added that the students government was asking for the immediate release of the students from detention.
 
He disclosed that the national leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by the president, Comrade Yinka Gbadibo was on the way to Keffi to state students’ anger against the water crisis, as well as the shooting of students by security personnel.
 
State police spoksesman, DSP Michael Ada confirmed that the police had a number of students in their detention cells at the state CID, but declined to state the exact figure.
 
He said “they were hurling stones at the security agents at the scene of the demonstration. That is why they were arrested.”
