Borno signs MOU with Indian firm on irrigation

The Borno State government at the weekend signed a Memoranda of Understanding with an Indian firm on irrigation development for agriculture.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Baba Kaka Bashir Gabai, who signed the MOU on behalf of the state government in Maiduguri, said the present administration of Governor Kashim Shettima places priority on agricultural development so as to provide jobs for its unemployed youths.

According to him, the state government has already established pivot irrigation schemes in each of its three senatorial districts.

Gabai said over 4,000 families living along the along river basin have been provided with job opportunities through the cultivation of 5,000 hectares of land in partnership with Chad Basin Develoment Authority (CBDA) in Kirenuwa and Marte parts of the state

In his remarks, representative of the Indian firm, Jain Irrigation System of Indian(JISI) Ltd, Mr S.R Balasubramanimi, said his company will do its best to ensure the success of the scheme.
