NTI raises alarm over fake teachers

Director General of the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, yesterday lamented over what he called the growing number of fake teachers in the country.

Speaking during a training programme for mathematics and science teachers, Dr. Sharehu said the rate at which the number of fake teachers is increasing gives cause for concern.

Dr. Sharehu, who was represented by the institute’s director for exams, research and academic services, Prince Sunday Kolawole, said there was urgent need to tackle the growing trend of fake teachers in order to salvage the country’s education sector. He however maintained that the situation is not peculiar to Kaduna alone.

“A number of people who you see claiming to be teachers are not teachers. They bought their certificates, and that is why we always support the idea of regular screening,” he said.

A week ago, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Usman Mohammed, disclosed that out of the 1,599 primary schools teachers subjected to primary four examination, only one of them scored up to 75 per cent.
