President Jonathan's high school cries for help
The school had to move to another location after Federal Government Girls College took over its founding structures in 1999.
In the last 13 years, Mater Dei High School has housed three of its laboratories- Physics, Biology and Chemistry in a small classroom. While its alumnus, Jonathan took political strides from Deputy Governor to Governor then Vice-President and finally President.
"For a long period this is the only place we have been managing as our laboratory. We have all our practicals here. I made an effort to make it presentable," the teacher told this Daily Trust reporter who was on the entourage of the Minister of state for education Barrister Nyesom Wike inspecting Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) projects.
The school which is located in the heart of the creeks has however attracted federal government presence with UBEC undertaking the construction and renovation of all its classrooms.
Wike who was pleased with the level of work done in Mater Dei however urged the contractor to ensure protection of the facility and start perimeter fencing.
He also visited the library project in FGGC Imiringi where he noted that the pace of work was slow in comparison to those ongoing in other unity schools because of the topography of the Niger Delta.
The Minister was also at Boys Junior Secondary School Otuoke where he commended the state government for using its UBE counterpart funding judiciously.
He said, "One of the problems we have in this country is that one awards contracts and sits in the office thinking it is ongoing when the funds have been diverted to some other things. But here we can witness that these funds are judiciously utilized."
