FG to build 40 houses for displaced Bakassi indigenes

Twenty contractors have been engaged by the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to build 40 units of houses for displaced persons in Ikpri-Ikang, Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.

Williams Aganga, a deputy director in the ministry, told the National Good Governance tour team that each contractor is handling two units at the sum of N19 million.

He said the idea behind the scheme is to reduce the housing deficit in Nigeria.

The estate will have 20 two bedroom apartments and 20 three bedroom apartments billed to be completed by April.

Aganga said consultations are ongoing with the state, local government and community so as to agree on modalities for allocating the houses.

He also said the programme is being replicated in other parts of the Niger Delta.

Also speaking, chairman of the local government, Ekpo Bassey, informed the team that another site has already been identified for the development of Bakassi new town.

Speaking to Daily Trust, a number of people in the area claimed ignorance of the project. They said they were not properly notified by the government what the land was going to be used for.
