ASUU wants social security for unemployed

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for a social security scheme for the unemployed and marginalised in Nigeria.

Rising from its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, ASUU stated that if all avenues of corruption and mindless looting in Nigeria are plugged, the country will be able to implement a social security programme to develop human capital.

In a communique signed by ASUU president, Dr Nasir Fagge, the association noted that the battle against corruption is being fought “half-heartedly with ridiculous outcomes”.

ASUU NEC noted that it was unimaginable, the judicial decision on the case of John Yakubu of the pension office saying, “It is unimaginable that this culprit could be allowed to pay a fine of N750,000 after embezzling about N23billion and left of the hook. Yet, the leadership of this country would want us to take it serious on its orchestrated crusade against corruption”.

ASUU also raised alarm over the quality and integrity of River State University of Technology, where it said students who were not properly taught were forced to write examinations in a most bizarre manner by the authorities.
