Insecurity taking toll on north’s economy-Gov Aliyu

Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, yesterday said that the insecurity situation in the region has started taking its toll on the economy, saying the popular Kantin Kwari market in Kano that hitherto made N 265 million now makes a paltry N 11 million daily.

Chairman of the forum, who is also the governor of Niger State, made the disclosure at the weekend during a reception organized to honour some distinguished sons and daughters of the state in Minna.

He said, “Kantin kwari market in Kano which used to make over N255 million daily, now makes a paltry N11 million”.

He said the patronage of several major markets in the region has dramatically reduced due to the insecurity problem bedevilled the region, calling on all stakeholders to work hard to restore normalcy to the region.

Aliyu, commiserated with the family and the people of Kano State over the death of ten polio vaccinators that were killed by unknown gunmen.

He added that those honoured at the reception were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the development of the country.

“None of the awardees are accidental public servants, they have earned their appointments on merit. They are men of honour and integrity who have contributed a lot to the nation. We are proud of them,” he said.

Those honoured are; Justice Musa Dattijo Mohammed, former acting president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Dalhatu Adamu, federal permanent secretary, John Alhassan Gana, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Peter Yisa Gana, chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau, Sam Ibrahim Saba and Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, Abubakar Yacin Dagaci.

Others are, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Dan’azumi Job Doma, Group Executive Director Cooperate Services (NNPC), Peter Nmadu, Executive Secretary, National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, Jibrin Yusuf Paiko, Executive Director NPHCDA, Ado Jimada Gana, Dr. Umar Gati Adamu and Captain (NN) Mohammed Baba Nagenu.
