Shettima ‘relocates’ to secondary school in Maiduguri

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State yesterday temporarily moved his office to Shehu Garbai Primary and Secondary School in Maiduguri where he spent eight hours under a tree while waiting for instructions to be carried out on the relocation of 1,000 desks and heavy duty hydra form machines for building of classroom blocks and staff quarters for teachers.

The governor, who was accom-panied by many commissioners and special advisers, wondered how learning can be possible in dilapidated classes that have no desks and tables as well as basic learning and teaching equipment for students and teachers.

The governor had just left the state Mechanical Workshop on Baga Road, Maiduguri where he inspected 1,200 desks and beddings he ordered to be produced and there-after paid an unscheduled visit to the school along Damboa Road, also in Maiduguri to assess the institution.

The governor, who moved from one class to another, was visibly worried with inadequacy of classrooms and desks for students as a result of which he ordered officials to immediately swing into action.

“I will remain here today no matter how long, I will not leave until desks are brought before my eyes and arranged in classrooms where they are needed. I will also not leave until machines are brought here for the ministry concerned to start building 10 classroom blocks and 10 units of houses for staff quarters which must be started tomorrow (today)” the governor said.

Shettima thereafter sat under a tree within the school and invited all teachers and management staff, held a detailed meeting with them and then allocated a government owned three bedrooms flat to one of the teachers at the meeting while he urged others to await the new staff quarters to be built.

He also directed that solar lights poles should be erected in the school while refrigerators should be allocated to every hostel in the school and all hostels across the remaining 84 secondary schools in the state.

The governor said the school, which is one of the oldest in Maidu-guri, deserves complete overhaul.
