Anenih faces House panel over N20bn road contract scam

Former works minister and PDP chieftain Tony Anenih is billed to appear before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts this week to explain his role in an alleged N20 billion road contract scam, Chairman of the committee Rep. Solomon Adeola Olamilekan, has said.
Speaking to newsmen yesterday in Abuja, Rep Olamilekan said the alleged scam included the sum of  N2.3 billion purportedly disbursed for an abandoned road project in Nasarawa State in 2006 while the contract was said to have been awarded in 2001.
The committee had late last year issued a summon to Anenih following queries issued by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF) in its 2006 audit report which  alleged that the failed road contract was awarded at the cost of N2.3 billion, of which N552 million was paid, before the contract was terminated but the contractor later went to court and obtained court judgment of N1.3 billion against the Federal Government for terminating the contract.
The contract is said to have been awarded during the first tenure of the Olusegun Obasanjo administration when Anenih was works minister.
