Oyo NURTW Deputy Chairman dies of gunshot wounds

Alhaji Kamorudeen Beyioku, the Deputy Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Oyo State Council has died following gunshot wounds he sustained at the hands of unknown assailants earlier in the week.


Beyioku reportedly gave up the ghost at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in the early hours of today.

Sources said that medical personnel battled in vain for four days to save Beyioku's life at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr Ayodele Lanade, disclosed that armed policemen kept vigil at the ICU while the battle to save Beyioku's life lasted.

While explaining that he was yet to be fully briefed over the circumstances leading to the death of the erstwhile Deputy Chairman of the Oyo NURTW, Lanade, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), justified the fortification of the hospital's ICU, saying it was necessary to prevent the gunmen from coming to complete the killing during treatment.

It will be recalled that Alhaji Beyioku was among the newly-inaugurated members of the State Executive of the Oyo NURTW, sworn in to steer the affairs of the union for the next four years..

The National President of the Union, Alhaji Najeem Yasin inaugurated the newly-constituted NURTW State Administative Council on Friday, December 21 last year during which Beyioku emerged as the Deputy Chairman of the union.

The 14-member SAC comprises Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde, aka Fele (Chairman); Comrade Akin James (State Secretary); Elder Lekan Aleshinloye (Assistant Secretary); Alhaji Kamorudeen Beyioku (Deputy Chairman); Alhaji Abideen Olajide (Vice Chairman); Alhaji Ademola Adeoye (State Treasurer); Elder Joseph Odeyemi (Assistant Treasurer); Alhaji Musa Adeleke (Financial Secretary); Alhaji Abass Adigun (State Auditor) and Alhaji Kasali Lawal (Assistant Auditor).

However, the embattled former chairman of the Oyo NURTW, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (aka Tokyo), whose executive was sacked by the administration of former Governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala in 2008, is curently in court challenging the legality of the current state executie of the union led by Alhaji Oyerinde.
