House probes ‘police complicity’ in murder of Oshiomhole’s aide

The House of Representatives yesterday started investigation into the alleged complicity of the Nigerian police in the murder of Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s Private Secretary Olaitan Oyerinde.

Oshiomhole last week at the launching of the police code of conduct in Abuja, accused the police of connivance, an allegation the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar denied.

The green chamber adopted a motion on the matter sponsored by Rep. Pally Eriase (ACN, Edo) on the urgent need to investigate the “allegation of cover-up and professional misconduct levelled against the Police”.

He maintained that the allegation is not only persistent but it has drawn widespread comment in the media about the safety of citizens and reliability of the police force and that, “the police has not defended itself nor deny authorship of the police report sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution in Edo State, which exposed the alleged shoddiness and criminal cover up perpetrated by the named D.l.G and others.”

According to him, “The State Security Service (SSS) had arrested and paraded six (6) suspects, who confessed that they murdered Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde. The suspects gave a graphic description of how the crime was committed and the SSS found on them an I- Pad, Cell phone and laptop belonging to Comrade Olaitan and the wedding ring of the victim’s brother- inlaw.”

Consequently, the House mandated its committees on Justice and Police Affairs to investigate the allegation and make appropriate recommendation to the House within 14 days.
