Zamfara prison boss attributes inmates fight to frustration

Last Saturday’s skirmish in Gusau medium security prison in Zamfara state was caused by frustration among the inmates awaiting trial, state prison controller Muhammad T. Dabai has said.
The prison boss said there were about 670 inmates in the prison with only 144 convicts while 526 are awaiting trial.
“Some of these prisoners have spent more than seven years awaiting trial and most of them have robbery cases therefore the Saturday skirmish was as a result of frustration and perhaps they did that to call the attention of the authority to their fate’’ he said.
It would be recalled that jail break was averted in he prison following riot orchestrated by the inmates last Saturday.
Sources in the state prison authority told Daily Trust that though two of the prison officials on duty sustained injuries trying to quell the fight no prisoner was able to escape.
All effort to hear from the state attorney general proved abortive as he declined comment on the matter.
