Gaidam goes tough on council chairmen

Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe state today issued stern warning to newly sworn-in Chairmen of the Seventeen Local Government Management Committee.

Speaking during the swearing in ceremony in Damaturu, Gaidam said that any chairman found wanting in the discharge of his duties would be shown the way out and handed over to law enforcement agents for appropriate action

He said the reappointment of the Local Government Management Committee was based strictly on their ranking after the evaluation of their performance in project execution by project supervision committee. He also warned that  they should always get their priorities right by identifying critical areas that require immediate government intervention

"Councils are expected to give attention to activities such as opening Fadama farms, provision of water pumps, seedlings and animal traction, as well as purchase of Keke napep and sewing machines for distribution to their people at subsidize rates with a view to creating job upportunities and empowering our youth toward self relience," he said

He however said that to ensure commitment and transparency in the conduct of Government business, he would monitor closely the way and manner chairmen of Local Government run the affairs of their councils.

He warned the council chairmen against physical movement of large sums of money to avoid losing the money to armed robbers as was done previously in two local governments in the state, saying that any chairman who allows that happen would be sacked immidiately from the office.

"In the alternative, payments and other transactions through banks should be  emphasized."

He said that local government election is expected to hold May/June this year.
