NLC vows to mobilise members against casualisation

The Lagos chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vowed to mobilize members against organizations that engage in casualisation of their workers.
Its chairman, Comrade Idowu Adelakun disclosed this at the weekend during the 10th Anniversary of Nexan Kabelmetal, where he maintained that casualisation is anti-labour in every ramifications as it is currently eroding the workers’ rights in workplaces.
Adelakun said, “We have done it before anywhere management stirs up policies negating the very principle which enshrines the legal existence of the Nigeria Labour Congress and in outright contravention of the International Labour Organisation conventions and principles of permanent employment and code of work ethics.”
He also promised that his chapter will protect workers whose rights are abused by their employers.
Speaking, Chairman of NLC Nexan Kabelmetal, Comrade Rufus Olusesan explained that the anniversary was held in order to evaluate the journey so far in the union and how to better confront the challenges ahead.
According to him, so far the union has been able to press for increment in medical allowance, eradication of casualisation, improvement on gratuity parameters, prompt attention to members’ complaints and refund of National Housing Fund contribution from 1998 till date amongst others.
He said ,”Workers doggedness and steadfastness for a workers-oriented leadership is the backbone for some of the achievements we have recorded so far. Ten years ago, workers stood their ground for a responsive union leadership of Nexans Kabelmetal and the struggle was won despite the difficulty confronted by workers in terms of intimidation and threats.”
